Did you know Longmont has an organic community garden?  From the City of Longmont's website:

History: Founded in 1996, the Second Start Community Garden is a communal organic garden where people of all ages and all levels of gardening experience grow their own vegetables, flowers and herbs.

While food is the immediate benefit from the Garden, other benefits are reaped as well, such as learning leadership skills, the gift of mutual respect and gaining a sense of community.

Studies of community gardens estimate that a 64 square foot garden plot can save a family $600 in food purchases per year. Second Start Community Garden plots average 400 square feet, which is enough space for gardeners to realize a substantial saving in food costs. Gardeners who have surplus vegetables have donated in the past to organizations such as the OUR Center, to help fight hunger in the community.

Second Start Community Garden has 53 plots. Plots can be rented by individuals or groups, with the fee determined on a sliding scale based on income. Gardeners sign a contract agreeing to participate in 10 hours of community work-share per season, plant by May 1, use organic gardening techniques and water conservation practices.
